Struggling Strasburg to DL with Neck Tightness

By Peyton Wesner

Last Friday was suppose to be the turning of a new leaf for Washington Nationals' starter Stephen Strasburg, but it was not. Strasburg, who entered the game with an earned run average of 6.50 and a record of 3-6, was probable to face a struggling Cincinnati Reds club that collected only one win in their last eleven games and possesed no hitters with a batting average of .300 or better. Due to this, many people in Nationals' Nation thought this was going to be the game to spur Strasburg to pitch like he did last season when he went 14-11 with an earned run average of 3.14. Sadly for them, injury prevented the chance to see Strasburg pitch past the second inning and rebound from a Joey Votto first inning solo homerun as neck tightness caused the 2014 National League strikeout leader to exit the game after a walk to Reds' catcher Bryan Pena.

Washington manager Matt Williams recognized that Strasburg did have back issues and the Nationals have gone so far to say bad mechanics by the former San Diego State product has caused them. On May 5 after three innings, Strasburg also exited a start against the Miami Marlins due to tightness in his back. As of now, there is no known correlation between the two injuries of back tightness and neck tightness. Washington recalled right-handed pitcher Taylor Hill, who went 3-2 in nine starts with an earned run average of 4.35 at Triple-A Syracuse, to take Strasburg's spot on the active roster.

Justin Verlander Knocked Around in Triple-A Rehab Start

By Peyton Wesner

It was his first ever Triple-A start and with today's performance, it may not be his last. The 2011 American League Cy Young and Most Valuable Player Justin Verlander was knocked around in two and two/thirds innings of work as he allowed three earned runs, on six hits. The 2014 Detroit Tigers Opening Day starter threw a total of seventy-nine pitches for three strikeouts and two walks with a fastball that regularly hit ninety-two miles per hour and topped out at ninety-five. In addition, his off speed pitches had batters swinging early in the count, but overall he had much trouble locating his pitches and allowed runners to enter scoring position in all three innings he was on the mound.

In his first inning of action, he was able to make the leadoff hitter flyout but then allowed a single to Indianapolis's Keon Broxton. Broxton later entered scoring position by stealing second base putting the pressure on Verlander immediately. Nevertheless, he was not fazed and retired Steve Lombardozzi with a strikeout and Brent Morel by groundout. The following inning would not go as smoothly.

The second inning started with Verlander getting Tony Sanchez to pop-up on the infield for the first out. Next, was Jeff Decker and he got the party started by blooping a single to right field making the right hander deliever from the stretch once again. Sure one baserunner is no serious issue, but three is, and that is what resulted as Verlander walked the next two batters to load the bases. Indianapolis's Gustavo Nunez would have a great opportunity to plate the first run of the game, especially after he worked the count to three balls and one strike.

Despite the 2011 American League MVP being one strike away from walking home a run, he was able to fight back and strike out Nunez. He was only one out away from escaping the jam, but he was re-entering the top of the lineup with leadoff man and MLB.com's 84th top prospect in baseball Alen Hanson stepping into the batter's box. Verlander was able to get Hanson to shoot a ball high into the air above where the infield ends and outfield begins. It would have been a sure out if shortstop Dixon Machado and third baseman Jefry Marte would have communicated and not let the ball fall as a hit. Two runs scored from the mental error and the Indians were leading 2-0. But the Triple-A affilate of the Pittsburgh Pirates were not done since Verlander reloaded the bases by hitting Broxton in the back with a ninety-three miles per hour fastball. This time though with three ducks on the pond, the Mud Hens' defense did not let down their rehabbing starter as right fielder Steven Moya caught a Lombardozzi flyout to retire the side.

The third inning was not any better for Verlander as the first two batters, Brent Morel and Tony Sanchez, reached base with singles. Here we go again? Not so fast! Verlander rebounded by striking out Decker setting up the possibility to escape the inning with a double play ball.  Elias Diaz had other plans though and softly hit a ball to centerfield ultimately reloading the bases. Gorkys Hernandez was the next man with an opportunity to break the 2-2 tie, and he capitalized on his chance with a long fly ball that brought the runner from third home. At this point, Verlander had seventy-nine pitches and Toledo manager Larry Parish decided to remove him.

Despite command issues, reports are that Verlander's arm is feeling good after his start. So far there has been no word on whether he will make another start for Toledo later in the week. If Tigers' manager Brad Ausmus decides to send Verlander back on the farm, the likely spot starter canidates to fill his spot in the rotation are Buck Farmer, who gave up seven earned runs to the Angels in five innings, and Kyle Ryan, who was Wednesday's winner after throwing three innings of one run ball.

Justin Verlander to Make Rehab Start Sunday in Indianapolis

By Peyton Wesner

What has to be the most anticipated minor league rehab start of the season will take place Sunday at Victory Field in Indianapolis, Indiana, as 2011 American League Cy Young Award Winner and Most Valuable Player Justin Verlander will take the mound for the first time this regular season against non-Tigers' players. Verlander, who strained his triceps on March 27 in a Spring Training game against Toronto in Dunedin, has participated in multiple bullpen sessions and simulated games. In fact, fellow Detroit ace David Price tweeted about his teammate's last simulated game Tuesday in Oakland where the former MVP threw four and two-thirds innings of three hit ball with no runs allowed and eight strikeouts on seventy pitches.

Tigers' Manager Brad Ausmus has yet to announce whether his 2014 Opening Day starter will make one more start for Triple-A Toledo after the scheduled, but he has said the pitch target Sunday is eighty to eighty-five pitches. It must be noted that the current starting rotation's set-up could play a factor in Ausmus' decision considering that Kyle Lobstein, Verlander's original replacement, is now on the DL with shoulder inflamation and Buck Farmer, who pitched Thursday in a spot start against the Los Angeles Angels, allowed a whopping seven earned runs in five innings of work in his first start of the season. After the start Sunday, the Detroit staff will re-evaulate Verlander and determine if he is ready to rejoin the rotation and make his 2015 season debut.

Kluber Strikes Out Thirteen in 5-3 Victory
After a May 7 start in Kansas City, analysts were skeptical of whether the 2014 American League Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber was a real star in Major League Baseball, but now there should is no doubt. Yesterday, Kluber overcame three earned runs against himself to get the win against a hot Seattle Mariners team that came in on a three-game winning streak. In addition to leading his team to victory, Kluber struck out thirteen Mariners and improved his record to 3-0 with fifty strikeouts in his last four starts. Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis led the Tribe offensively with two runs batted in on two hits while Brandon Moss drilled his eighth home run of the season in the second inning off of Seattle's James Paxton.

Eduardo Rodriguez Dominates in ML Debut
Going into Thursday night's Boston at Texas matchup, the bright lights and attention were on Josh Hamilton since it was his first game back in Arlington after going to Anaheim to be an Angel. This morning though, everyone was talking about Boston Red Sox' rookie Eduardo Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who was traded from the Baltimore Orioles for Andrew Miller at last season's trade deadline, threw seven and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball while striking out seven. Despite getting knocked around in Louisville as a part of the Pawtucket Paw Sox (Triple-A affiliate of Boston) for five runs (two earned) on nine hits in his previous start, the lefty with a fastball, changeup, slider repertoire was amazing last night and held the trio of Prince Fielder, Adrian Beltre, and Elvis Andrus to one for eleven hitting. Josh Hamilton did not disappoint the fans in his homecoming as he had the best game of a Ranger by going two for four with one run batted. Unfortunately, no one will remember his performance thanks to Eduardo José Rodriguez.

Will this be the year that the Chicago Cubs return to the playoffs? Anything is possible, and a series win against Kansas City this weekend is as well. Although the Cubs are coming off a series that saw them defeated in two of three games thanks to offensive struggles while pitching only allowing three runs at most to the Nationals per matchup, the Kansas City Royals have lost their last four games by averaging only 1.25 runs per contest on 6.5 hits. Simply the offense nor pitching has been with the Royals of late and that will be bad news if the trend continues with Cubs starter Jake Arrieta, who has a earned run average is 2.14 in his last three starts, on the mound and third base phenom Kris Bryant seeing the ball very well with two long bombs in his last three games. But, Kansas City starter Edinson Volquez did have Chicago's number as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates last season and was 2-0 in three starts with an earned run average of .56.

Pirates Sail to Seventh Straight Victory
If San Diego is the best park for pitchers in Major League Baseball, don't tell Clint Hurdle's Pittsburgh Pirates. Last night at Petco Park, Pittsburgh captained by 2013 National League Most Valuable Player Andrew McCutchen obliterated Padres pitching starting with a Jung Ho Kang first inning homerun to take a 3-0 lead. Later in the third inning, Starling Marte shot a ball out to the left field seats to extend the lead to 6-0. San Diego was able to muster five runs on Pirates' starter A.J. Burnett thanks to a combination of productive outs, RBI singles, and errors, but it would prove futile as Josh Harrison and Andrew McCutchen turned the lights off with one RBI double each in the top of the sixth. Cutch would end the day three for five with two runs batted in and two runs scored.

Giants Rookie Pitcher Heston Shuts Down Atlanta
Who needs Jake Peavy with how Chris Heston has pitched this season! Heston, a right handed pitcher from East Carolina University, has filled in perfectly for currently rehabing in Triple-A Sacramento Peavy and late last night he sent Atlanta Brave after Brave back to the dugout in their insurmountable tries to plate runs. While Heston was dominating for San Francisco, Shelby Miller was dealing for Atlanta until in the seventh inning Giants' first baseman Brandon Belt belted an opposite field home run to put the first run on the board in the. Miller would finish the inning unscathed, but the damage was already done. The following inning, San Francisco would add six more runs on relievers Brandon Cunniff and Donnie Veal to send Atlanta to a 1-3 record on their California road trip.

What to Watch
25-22 Pittsburgh (2-4 Liriano)
@ 23-26 San Diego (6-0 Shields)

How can the Padres stop a Pirates' attack at Petco Park? With Shields! James Shields has not disappointed for San Diego since leaving Kansas City and is off to his best start of his career with a 6-0 record. Strangely, the right hander from Newhall, California, has won half of his games despite allowing three or more earned runs while receiving no decisions in three starts where he gave up less than two runs. Another factor that could play as an advantage for the Padres is that only three Pirates (Francisco Cervelli, Sean Rodriguez, and Chris Stewart) have faced Shields in their career, but this fact may not matter considering how well Pittsburgh has hit the ball during theirr seven game winning streak. During the span, the Pirates have averaged five runs per game, which will be more than enough if Liriano can build on the six inning, twelve strike out performance he had last Sunday against the Mets.
