Reds' Rookie Jon Moscot Opts for Season-Ending Shoulder Surgery

The Cincinnati Reds really need to call an exterminator because an injury bug has been attacking the team all year. Key contributors such as starting pitcher Homer Bailey and shortstop Zack Cozart are lost for the rest of the 2015 season due to being bit and now another will join them.

Rookie pitcher Jon Moscot made his Major League debut on June 5, and after only three starts he has opted to have season-ending shoulder surgery after "significant damage" was suffered in his non-throwing arm during the first inning of Monday's contest at Comerica Park against the Tigers as he was trying to tag Detroit lead-off man Anthony Gose at second base.

The right-handed pitcher from Pepperdine was 7-1 with a 3.15 earned run average in nine starts at Triple-A Louisville before being recalled and will finish this season 1-1 with an earned run average of 4.63 in three starts in the Majors. Moscot, who is Cincinnati's thirteenth ranked prospect, figures to be completely healthy for the 2016 season as he will compete for a spot in the starting rotation in spring training.

As of today, Reds' manager Bryan Price has yet to announce who will take Moscot's place in the rotation, but canidates to keep an eye on are Dylan Axelrod (3-5, 4.44 ERA in 13 Triple-A starts), David Holmberg (3-4, 4.46 ERA in 12 Triple-A starts), and Josh Smith (1-3, 3.56 ERA in 8 Triple-A starts) from Louisville in addition to Raisel Iglesias (1-1, 5.11 ERA, 25 K in 24.2 innings pitched with Cincinnati), who is currently on the shelf with an oblique injury.
